Several people have contacted me asking how to tell if they have toxic Chinese drywall in their house or business. Generally, but not always, there is the "rotten egg" odor caused by Sulfur gasses. Also if there is some way you can view the back, or unfinished, side of the drywall see if it is marked as being made in China. Further if it is stamped "KNAUF" it is imported from China. Check your evaporator coils and copper wires in your indoor A/C units. If they are black you have the toxic drywall. Finally, remove the covers from some electrical outlets to see if the copper wires are black. Use care as the wires are live.

Not all drywall from china is marked 'made in china' or 'knauf'- some is unmarked and the source is unknown, and not all drywall marked 'knauf' was made in china. Some of the drywall from china is not defective and some homes were built with more than one kind of drywall (made in USA and made in China). I agree that the best way it seems to tell is the smell, black wires, and year of construction.

In response to a question by Carl posted April 09,2009 the toxic drywall appears to be first used in Florida homes built or repaired in 2004. Unfortunately that was the year 4 category three hurricanes slammed Florida. The same appears to be true in other states.

I live in Hermitage, TN. My home was built between 8/08 and 12/08. Whet are the chances I have toxic drywall. It's a little early for the wires and other copper to blacken. Is there a chemical analysis kit or service available to determine if a sample has the contaminated Gypsum?
